Healthy at Home: Hydration

Writer: Michelle HowellMichelle Howell

Is it just me or is it 1000x harder to stay on top of nutrition right now? Especially hydrating. Long gone are the days of me carrying around my liter jug of water that accompanied me to most of my college classes or my endless amount of Maurten bottles the live in my practice bag.

Being at home all day, not running, and not training by dinner time I'm questioning if I've even had a sip of water since dinner the previous night. So I've gone back to my roots (not lugging around that liter jug) and spiced up my hydration game with the old go-to's.

Agua, then Espresso

Before my morning coffee, I try to get in some water. After sleeping for eight to ten hours chances are your a little hydrated and if you haven't lived under a rock the past few years drinking water first thing in the morning has been proven to promote better skin and kick starts your metabolism.

Sparkling over still

If I'm being honest, I hate flat water. When given the option it's sparkling over still for me. Flatwater is just boring and not satiating unless I've just finished a run and dying of thirst, neither of which is happening right now. Sparkling water makes me want to drink water throughout the day.

Lemony Sip-it 🍋

If my puns lost on you so is the quote "never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them". Lemon juice is something you can always find in my kitchen. Sure fresh lemon slices look cool and instagrammable in a glass, but the juice concentrate does the job with the same refreshing taste and keeps longer than a freshly sliced lemon.

A few lemon water benefits include:

Aids in preventing Oxidation aka packs a punch of phytonutrients to prevent cell damage

Contains a dose of Vitamin C

Helps to prevent Kidney Stones

Tart Cherry Juice🍒

Tart cherry juice has been the talk of the town athletically for its antioxidants and potential health benefits of reducing inflammation. While it's not something I actively incorporate into my post-workout routine as some people do (inflammation isn't always a bad thing, you're body needs that response in order to adapt) it is something I like to add to my water throughout the day to punch a little flavor and reap some of those antioxidant benefits.
