Back-ish in action

Writer: Michelle HowellMichelle Howell

I think I can finally say I'm back (kind of)! Going on week five from my third (and hopefully last) round of PRP I'm finally "running" again. Obviously it's a slow process and I'm definitely more than ready to be back. I say "running" because right now it's very slow jogging on the treadmill at an incline to force me into good mechanics (pushing into the ground, driving the knee, landing on the midfoot/toe), wall runs (well, really more like tree runs lately), and short exaggerated strides.

While everything is going well it's hard to not get excited and want to do more. After so many months without it and having it back in a very limited capacity means being patient and not overdoing it even though I feel good. It's like having your favorite dessert in front of you and not being able to eat it. Realistically I know there's no need to rush or urgency for me to get back apart from my own desire to run again.

In a lot of ways, it feels like learning how to run again, and what better place than my middle school track. Being home I've spent practice here with some supervision from Lilly and Max. Most of my time here is spent teaching my hip flexor and glute to function properly and get back some mobility. I do a lot of controlled articular rotation, airplanes, and frog stretches to get everything warmed up and moving right. After that, I've begun to alternate my allotted days of the week doing short bouncy strides which feel awkward to do at such slow paces and treadmill at an incline. The days I don't do any of my running activity I'm off to the beach to get in some swimming for cross-training.

So far my strides though have been going pretty well to the point that ironically, this might be the best my form has ever looked. It's only taken a labral tear for my body to actually learn how to get my knee up 🥴. The only small remnant of my tear and tendon issues is some general tightness in the mornings, but nothing during or after my sessions. It's good to be getting back into the swing of things, slowly and steadily. Hopefully by next next check in I'll be really running some.

Watch until the end for a cute surprise
